Left Foot Charley

Left Foot Charley was created in 2004. Winemaker Bryan Ulbrich was called to a favorite vineyard which had been recently sold to a new owner. It was sliding quickly into a state of disaster. The excessive growth, negligent canopy management, and impending powdery mildew attack were too much to bear. With the somewhat bridled, yet honest support of his wife Jennifer, they canceled their vacation in order to work in this vineyard and save the Riesling. In exchange, they were able to harvest a small crop and create their first dry Riesling. And Left Foot Charley was born.

Left Foot Charley partners with 16 (and growing!) local growers who own fantastic vineyards across Northern Michigan. These passionate viticulturists focus on meticulous vine care in unique sites, perfect for creating distinctive wines.

Previously, many of these small vineyards sold their grapes to be blended anonymously. Left Foot Charley saw their potential and now crafts wines that showcase the unique character of each site.  Factors like lake influence, soil types, and individual grower expertise all contribute to the diverse flavors in each bottle. Left Foot Charley prioritizes long-term partnerships, valuing not just the grapes but the dedication of these local heroes.

Distributed via Craft Cellars, Craft Collective’s wine division, offering a carefully curated selection of wine from small, artisan producers worldwide, with a focus on quality, passion, and unique, distinctive wines.
