Finca Fuentegalana
Located in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, in the far southeast of Ávila province, in the tiny village of Navahondilla at Finca Fuentegalana, third-generation winegrower/enologist/chemist Cristina Carrillo makes delicious Garnacha and Albillo Real, in addition to surprising expressions of Syrah, Cabernet, and Moscatel. Her grandfather started planting vines at Fuentegalana in 1942, but it was her father, Juan Ramon, who heeded the call of Navahondilla’s unique, cooler microclimate to plant Syrah in the middle of Garnacha and Albillo country in the early 1980s. Now, with Cristina at the helm of the winery, Fuentegalana’s 7.5ha of vineyards and thoughtful wines are an interesting part of the story of the current Gredos Renaissance and the results are fabulous: terroir-expressive reds, silky whites, and rosés, and muy punk sparklers that push the envelope in this rapidly innovating region.
